UCSB Sustainability hosts Building Habitats Workshop

UCSB Sustainability is hosting a Building Habitats Workshop on Thursday, May 1, from 4-6 p.m.

“Ready to give back to nature and create a home for helpful critters like birds and beneficial insects? Join us for a hands-on workshop where we’ll be building wildlife homes from wood for community gardens,” the Shoreline description read.

This event is open to everyone, including beginners, to woodwork.  Students may sign up at the link on Shoreline to attend.

MCC holds ‘Worlds We Make’

The MultiCultural Center (MCC) is holding “Worlds We Make: Using Speculative Fiction for Feminist Survival Toolkits” on Thursday, May 1, from 5-7 p.m. at the MCC Lounge.

“We are living in hard times. Pandemics, climate change, neoliberal capitalism, deportations and state violence, genocide, cisheteropatriarchy, white supremacy, ableist disposability, erasure, and necropolitics. In this workshop, we are going to enhance our toolkits for our survival and sustenance while we imagine worlds in which we thrive,” the Shoreline description read.

This event is led by professor Jigna Desai from the Department of Feminist Studies and Department of Asian American Studies and the director of the Center for Feminist Futures.

UCSB Sustainability hosts ‘Little Green Thumbs: Fun Indoor Gardening for Kids!’

UCSB Sustainability is hosting “Little Green Thumbs: Fun Indoor Gardening for Kids!” on Saturday, May 3, from 1-2 p.m.

“Through engaging activities, they’ll explore the magic of seeds, soil, and sprouts while learning about plant life cycles and eco-friendly gardening. Each child will take home their own mini garden to watch grow!” the Shoreline description read.

RHA holds Chi-Chella

Residential Housing Association (RHA) is holding Chi-Chella on Sunday, May 4, from 6-10 p.m. at the San Nicolas and San Miguel Residence Hall lawns.

“Spring term brings late sunsets, warm weather, and UCSB’s Chi-Chella Festival! Chi-Chella (kai-chell-uh, named after Coachella) is the biggest annual event for the Channel Island 5 Residence Halls,” the Shoreline description read.

Free food including hot dogs, hamburgers, vegan slides and pizza from Home Plate Grill will be provided. Students will also be able to enter a raffle for various prizes.

Health & Wellness hosts ‘Mindfulness for Wandering Minds’

Health & Wellness is holding “Mindfulness for Wandering Minds” on Monday, May 5, from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at the Lagoon Lawn.

“We will start with a journaling exercise, then guide you through a meditation. Our neurodiverse-friendly environment will offer practical tools to engage in meditation and mindfulness exercises in a way that works for you,” the Shoreline description read.

This event is part of a three-week series that will also continue on Monday of Week 8.

MCC holds ‘Honoring Femme Indigenous Energy’

MCC is holding “Honoring Femme Indigenous Energy” on Monday, May 5, from 5-7 p.m. at the MCC Lounge.

“May is Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives Awareness Month and May 5 is Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Relatives Awareness Day. MMIWR is a crisis that disproportionately affects Indigenous Women, Girls, Trans, and Two-Spirit Relatives,” the Shoreline description read.

This event is cosponsored by the American Indian and Indigenous Cultural Resource Center.

Women’s Center hosts Self-Defense Workshop

Women’s Center is hosting a Self-Defense Workshop on Monday, May 5, from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Student Resource Building (SRB) Multipurpose Room (MPR).

“Bring your friends and learn effective techniques to protect yourself in a fun and informative environment. Don’t miss this empowering opportunity!” the Shoreline description read.

Chancellor’s Staff Advisory Council holds Coal Oil Point Tour

The Chancellor’s Staff Advisory Council is holding a Coal Oil Point Tour on Tuesday, May 6, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Coal Oil Point.

“This natural reserve is owned and operated by UCSB and is less than 2 miles away from campus. Guides will discuss the cultural and natural history of the area while you take a scenic walk around the reserve,” the Shoreline description read.

Attendees are encouraged to wear walking shoes to this event.

MCC hosts ‘This Is America: Art as Protest’ 

The MCC is hosting “This Is America: Art as Protest,” the Spring Art Exhibit reception on Tuesday, May 6, from 6-8 p.m. at the MCC Lounge.

“The MCC’s Spring Art Exhibit’s theme, This Is America: Art as Protest, is a showcase that sparks critical conversations about the current political climate—both on campus and across the nation. This exhibit seeks to highlight critical conversations on pressing issues such as gun violence, immigration, and the ongoing fight for diversity, equity, and inclusion,” the Shoreline description read.

Zonelysse will be featured as the artist-in-residence. Students may register at the link on Shoreline to attend.

Students for Reproductive Justice holds ‘Bridging the Gap: Research on Women’s Reproductive Health’

Students for Reproductive Justice is holding “Bridging the Gap: Research on Women’s Reproductive Health” on Wednesday, May 7, from 6-8:30 p.m. at the SRB MPR.

“The medical field and specifically reproductive care field, continues to push outdated medical practices based off of illegal experiments conducted on women over 200 years ago. It is not a system built for women, especially women of color,” the Shoreline description read.

This event is open to all students.
