UC Santa Barbara admitted around 47% of its 127,382 undergraduate applicants for fall 2026 — a 5.3% percentage point increase compared to the previous year.

The increase comes as the UC system continues its goal of “expanding access for qualified California residents.”

Overall, UCSB offered admission to 59,336 students, 6,077 more than in fall 2025, despite receiving 1,601 fewer applications. In fall 2025, UCSB admitted 53,259 of its 128,983 applicants, resulting in an approximately 41.3% combined admit rate.

The increase comes as the UC system continues its goal of “expanding access for qualified California residents.” In fall 2026, the UC offered admission to a record 102,031 California first-year students, 1,458 more than the previous year. The systemwide admit rate for California first-year applicants also increased from 77% to 78%.

The UC reports admission and enrollment separately. Admission figures represent students who were offered a spot at the University, while enrollment figures represent students who ultimately accepted.

The UC has been attempting to increase in-state enrollment via its UC 2030 capacity plan, a multi-year framework that aims to add over 17,000 undergraduate California residents by 2030. The plan is in accordance with the UC’s multi-year compact with the state, an agreement made in May 2022 in which the UC committed to increasing California resident enrollment by 1% every year to receive state funding increases.

In a statement to the Daily Nexus, UCSB’s Admissions Executive Director, Cuca Acosta, stated that the increase is meant to help the University meet enrollment goals as students increasingly apply to more universities.

“The acceptance rate has increased at UCSB over the last year as we now see more and more students who apply to over 10 universities,” Acosta said. “Our overlap with other universities in California and across the US has made us evaluate how many students we admit to yield a first-year and transfer class which meets enrollment goals.”

As UCSB works to meet these enrollment goals, efforts to accommodate the growing student population have coincided with the construction of new on-campus housing. The University is currently constructing the San Benito Student Housing project, which will add 2,224 undergraduate beds and is anticipated to open in fall 2027.
