Junior forward Jen Borcich scored at the 3:33 mark in Friday’s match against Pacific, boosting the UCSB women’s soccer team to its first shutout of the weekend and snapping the Gauchos’ six-match winless streak.

Santa Barbara (8-5-4, 3-2-2 in the Big West) went undefeated this weekend, blanking both Pacific and Northridge, 2-0 each.

“I’m pleased with the weekend,” Head Coach Paul Stumpf said. “We really feel like we were due.”

The Gauchos’ second goal on the Tigers (4-10-2, 3-3-1 in the Big West) came from freshman midfielder Morgan Tanner in the 64th minute off of a defensive deflection. Borcich’s goal was also unassisted, coming from the top of the box over Tiger goalkeeper Laura Guerin’s head.

UCSB sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Considine posted four saves on Pacific’s 14 shots while Guerin had one save on Santa Barbara’s 13 shots.

The Tigers were able to keep the Big West scoring leader, junior midfielder Krystal Sandza, scoreless for the match. Pacific seniors Gabby Olivares and Ginny Tuenissen each fired close shots that missed by a goal post, and Santa Barbara kept freshman forward Carmen Padilla to four shots and no goals.

UCSB scored two goals in two minutes against Northridge (3-11-3, 1-7-0 in the Big West) Sunday. Borcich sent a header off of a corner kick into the back of the net in the 83rd minute of the Gauchos’ contest with the Matadors. Two minutes later, Sandza fed the ball to Borcich, who then passed it to freshman forward Allie Kueny. From close in on the left side, Kueny shot it into the right corner past Matador goalkeeper Jen Jasper.

Matador senior midfielder standouts Shannon DeVos and Cindy Mallett were kept from taking any shots on Considine.

“This was a very slow game for both teams,” Stumpf said.

After playing a flat first half with Northridge, the Gauchos went into the locker room having given up three shots and taking only five. Considine made her only save of the match in the first half, earning her eighth shutout of the season.

“[At the half] the team dug in deep; we made a couple changes, and from there we pretty much took over and dominated,” Stumpf said. “It was two different halves altogether.”

Some changes included returning Sandza to her usual target position and adding Kueny to the lineup. From there, Santa Barbara outshot the Matadors, 20-0, and ended the match with a win.

“We finally caught a break,” Stumpf said. “We are possibly getting ourselves back into a position where we’re challenging other teams for one of those top four spots in the Big West to get into the tournament.”

The wins on the road, as well as UCSB’s tie with Cal Poly, should boost Santa Barbara’s conference standings. The Gauchos were ranked seventh in the Big West as of last Friday.
