Local law enforcement agents shot and killed an armed 64-year-old Santa Barbara man at his home yesterday morning, following a brief standoff.

Donald George was shot several times by Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s deputies after he confronted the officers, armed with a handgun, Sheriff’s Dept. spokesman Sgt. Alex Tipolt said. After being shot, George was transported to the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital but died of his wounds later.

At approximately 8 a.m. deputies responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at George’s residence on Via Gennita in Santa Barbara. While en route, the officers were informed the male subject, George, was possibly armed with a handgun.

Upon arrival, deputies located George, gun in hand. Ignoring orders to drop his weapon, George entered his home. When he reemerged, the suspect was still brandishing a handgun. George confronted the deputies once more with his gun and they opened fire on him, shooting him several times.

A criminal investigation into the circumstances leading up to the shooting is currently being conducted. In addition, an administrative investigation is taking place to assure that the deputies acted according to policy. Due to the ongoing investigation, no further information was made available.
