UC Santa Barbara Women’s Soccer suffered a 0-2 defeat against California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo on Wednesday, Oct. 21, as rainy weather and two Mustang goals complicated the Gauchos’ efforts at Spanos Stadium in San Luis Obispo.
Heavy rainfall created difficult playing conditions for the 38th meeting of the rivalry between these two teams. Precipitation left portions of the field covered in water, disrupting the pace of play and making ball movement challenging for both sides.
Cal Poly broke the scoreless tie just eight minutes into the game. Following a corner kick from freshman Mustang defender Kate Nunes, UCSB failed to clear the ball from its penalty area, where the ball found the head of junior Mustang defender Lilly Cole, who directed it back to senior Mustang forward Annika Smith for the header to take an early advantage.
Following the opening goal, Cal Poly maintained control of the match and limited UCSB’s offensive production. The Gauchos managed only two shots through the first 40 minutes before generating several opportunities near halftime. However, they entered the break trailing 0-1.
The Gauchos responded with increased offensive pressure to start the second half, recording three early shot attempts. UCSB continued pushing forward throughout the opening 20 minutes but struggled to turn its possession and scoring chances into a goal.

Cal Poly eventually regained momentum and extended its advantage in the 73rd minute. A header from Nunes sailed just past senior goalkeeper Maddie Buckley, giving the Mustangs a 0-2 lead.
UCSB continued searching for a breakthrough in the closing minutes. Freshman midfielder Ava Ybarra came close to scoring when her shot struck the left goalpost, while senior forward Olivia Howard saw a close-range attempt blocked by the Mustang defense. Neither opportunity produced a goal, allowing junior Cal Poly goalkeeper Shannon Porubski to finish the shutout.
The Gauchos dropped to 3-3-3 in Big West conference play, following an additional loss to Utah Valley University on Oct. 24. UCSB will next travel to Matador Soccer Field for a matchup against California State University, Northridge on Wednesday, Oct. 28.
