UC system announces major rebranding of UCSB

On Friday, Sept. 11 the University of California system announced a major change to one of its most recognizable campuses, revealing that UCSB will no longer stand for University of California, Santa Barbara. 

Effective immediately, the acronym will instead stand for University of California, See (you in) Barcelona, a name university officials say more accurately reflects the typical student experience. The decision follows what administrators described as “years of hard data” that illustrates how an unusually large portion of UCSB students eventually study abroad in Barcelona. 

“We realized that Santa Barbara was becoming less of a destination school and more of a departure point for a large number of students. Students apply here with the long term goal of ending up in front of La Sagrada Familia,” one UC official wrote in a statement. This major change is an attempt to capture the “global trajectory” of UCSB students and this widely observed migration pattern. 

The name change is just one aspect of the anticipated rebrand; university promotional materials will now emphasize the inevitable transition to Barcelona, and curriculum will be geared towards Spanish immersion. 

“Santa Barbara is just the first chapter. Barcelona is the third-year sequel,” the university’s updated website reportedly reads. 

The change has generated excitement among students, but some have reported being surprised to learn that Barcelona wasn’t in fact already an official UCSB campus. 

“I thought everyone at UCSB went to Barcelona and that it was, like, mandatory. I guess I just assumed it was part of our graduation requirements,” third-year Spanish major Emily Carter said. 

Another student said the rebranding made perfect sense.

“First year you’re on campus. Second year you’re in Isla Vista. Third year you’re in Barcelona. And fourth year, you’re still somehow always talking about Barcelona. It’s just expected that you go to Barcelona to get the true UCSB experience,” third-year linguistics major Rachel Cuomo said.

University officials have emphasized that this rebrand won’t have an impact on the school’s academic programs, admission process or physical location. However, professors have been asked to consider creating more classes taught solely in Spanish, and making Spanish biliteracy a graduation requirement. 

There are also rumors that the Santa Barbara Airport will introduce a new direct flight to Barcelona that is geared specifically towards UCSB students heading towards the motherland.
