UC Santa Barbara student Reef Mordente was arrested earlier this month on multiple sexual assault charges that allegedly occurred at an Isla Vista fraternity house. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office believes there are witnesses to the assault and is requesting that they come forward.
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office (SBSO) began investigating a report of sexual assault at a fraternity house located on the 6500 block of Cordoba Road in April. According to the SBSO press release, the assault occurred at a wedding-themed party.
The UCSB Interfraternity Council did not respond to requests for comment.
Mordente surrendered to the Los Angeles Police Department on Aug. 9 and was booked and released on $100,000 bail. He was arrested on a felony warrant for alleged rape of an intoxicated person, forced oral copulation and digital penetration. According to Public Information Officer Raquel Zick, the investigation is still ongoing.
During the investigation, officials discovered conversations in which Mordente framed the incident “in ‘scoring’ or ‘conquering’ terms.”
“We want to emphasize the seriousness of these crimes and the lasting trauma they cause survivors. Coming forward can be difficult, but it is essential in helping ensure accountability, preventing future harm, and supporting survivors in their healing process,” the press release read.
SBSO encouraged potential witnesses to come forward with information regarding the case. Those with information can contact Detective Ellis at 805-681-4150 or share anonymously at sbsheriff.org/home/anonymous-tip or 805-681-4171.
The Nexus will continue to report on this topic as more information becomes available.
