On July 13, the Major League Baseball draft took place, giving talented athletes a chance to go pro. This draft proved to be a historic one for the Gauchos as three UC Santa Barbara men’s baseball stars were selected.
The first Gaucho selected was right-handed pitcher Tyler Bremner. The Los Angeles Angels selected Bremner with the second pick in the first round of the draft, making Bremner the highest-selected player in UCSB history and the first pitcher selected in the 2025 MLB draft.
As his name was called with the second overall pick, Bremner was visibly emotional as he shared this heartfelt and life-changing moment with his family. This pick shocked the world of baseball as Bremner was predicted to be drafted around pick No. 16. When he was taken second instead, the draft commentator on ESPN MLB reacted by saying “the mocks have been exploded.” Despite these reactions, with a strikeout total of 295 and a win-loss record of 21-9, the Angels could simply not pass up on Bremner in the early first round.
On July 14, the second day of the MLB draft, two more UCSB pitchers were selected. The New York Mets selected right-handed pitcher Frank Camarillo in the 13th round, and shortly after, the Minnesota Twins selected right-handed pitcher Reed Moring in the 15th round. In their respective careers with UCSB, Camarillo had a total of 39 career strikeouts and Moring had a total of 94 career strikeouts. In the 2025 season, Moring finished with a career best 2.55 ERA.
With Bremner, Camarillo and Moring being drafted in the 2025 MLB draft, the total number of Gauchos drafted under head coach Andrew Checketts has risen to 70. Checketts leads the Big West Conference in players drafted to the major leagues. With this historic 2025 draft, UCSB continues to cement its reputation as a powerhouse for developing baseball talent.
