The University of California Board of Regents rejected a proposal to purchase a new residence for UC President Michael V. Drake at a Sept. 13 Regents meeting following security breaches at his home in Berkeley.

The property reportedly cost $12 million. The Regents rejected the proposal in a 13-7 closed-session vote, with dissenters citing the high price tag as an issue.

Drake faced security breaches such as a break-in, trespassers and racist graffiti spray painted this May.

Though the proposal was rejected, the Regents said they are committed to increasing safety for Drake and are considering a myriad of alternative options.

“We are very concerned about making sure President Drake and his family are safe and secure based on the horrific attack that occurred,” UC Board of Regents Chair Richard Leib said to the Los Angeles Times. “But we will not be going forward with this proposal.”

The Regents did not respond to Nexus inquiries on what safety upgrades are being considered, and what actions are being taken.
