After hosting its second annual invitational tournament this weekend, featuring the top teams in the region, the UCSB women’s club soccer team remains undefeated.
The Gauchos played Long Beach on Saturday morning, winning 3-0. Next, UCSB took on Davis Saturday night, earning another win, 4-1. In their final two games of the tournament Sunday, the Gauchos downed Arizona 2-0 and San Diego State 3-1 in the final.
“As a team, it was our first weekend against some really good tough competition and we did very well,” Head Coach Todd Heil said.
Nine teams participated in the tournament, including Cal, San Diego State, UCLA, Loyola Marymount, Davis, Long Beach, Arizona and USC.
The Gauchos were helped by a strong performance from junior midfielder Morgan Tanner.
“She had a great weekend in the middle winning balls for the team,” Heil said.
Another key player in UCSB’s success this weekend was senior forward Randi Johns. Heil credited Johns’ strong influence on the offensive attack as an important part of the tournament championship.
“She had a tremendous weekend up top and two very pivotal goals, one against Davis and the second against Arizona in the semifinal,” Heil said.
According to Heil, Arizona was the toughest competition the team faced over the weekend.
“They play very similar to us. We were very fortunate to finish and get the result,” Heil said.
Much of Santa Barbara’s success came from its strong play on defense. The Gauchos outscored their opponents 12-2 in four games over the weekend.
“The defense has been solid, only allowing two goals,” team president Vanessa Rath said. “Overall, it was a really good team effort.”
The team is now 8-0 and will travel to UCLA and USC this weekend. Regionals will be held in Arizona on Oct. 28, 29 and 30.
