For this year’s Welcome Back concert, UC Santa Barbara’s Associated Students Program Board treated students to a performance by Chicago rapper BabyChiefDoIt, whose energetic drill beats filled the University Center Hub with energy last Friday, Sept. 25.

It was marked by significant audience interactivity, with the charismatic artist — whose real name is Jayden Whitter Jones — often gesturing to and speaking with the crowd, bathed in neon red by the stage lights. Jones’ stage presence was beyond his years, having only recently turned 18. Yet, it was also his youthful exuberance that powered the show.

Highlights of the event included Jones’ hit songs “Ghetto Love Story,” “WENT WEST” and “The Viper.” Overall, it was a highly kinetic way to kick off the year, and for many students, their college experience.
