Senate condemns sexual assault in light of recent reports

In response to recent reports of sexual violence on campus, the 77th Associated Students Senate passed a resolution voicing support for sexual assault survivors during their online July 15 meeting. 

Legislation Passed

Senator and second-year philosophy and English double major Simai Kang along with Senator and second-year political science major Addy Nguyen proposed the resolution in order to demonstrate the Senate’s commitment to upholding students’ right to a safe campus life. 

Unlike the 76th Senate’s process of sending the resolution to a committee, discharging and then voting on it, the 77th Senate moved to adopt the resolution right after its proposal. The motion was passed unanimously. 

Reports

Executive Director Sean Lieberman reported that the Associated Students (A.S.) advisory position for student advocacy, equity and wellbeing must be approved by Chancellor Dennis Assanis. This is the third step of a four-step process to create new career staff positions. After gaining the chancellor’s approval, A.S. Human Resources must grant A.S. the ability to search for the position’s fulfillment. 

Lieberman also reminded the Senate of the new legal code regarding signatures to create boards, committees and units (BCUs) and place fees on the A.S. election ballot; due to low voter turnout, in order to establish a new BCU 1000 signatures are required, and to place a fee on the ballot 1599 signatures are required.
