After the University of California system released admission decisions in the early weeks of March, campus tours have substantially increased as prospective students begin to decide which university they will attend. At UC Santa Barbara, tour groups have been loitering around campus, sneaking glances at the students like visitors at a zoo.

In honor of 4/20, campus tour guides have added new routes to their stops to find the nearest groups of stoners. The tour guides have really played into the joke, some even handing out edibles and pre-rolls at the beginning of their tour, allowing students to get the full UCSB experience.

“This week, I really paid special attention to the kids wearing cross necklaces. It was the best when the kids got really into it and the parents looked all terrified. You could just really see the light drain from their eyes,” tour guide and third-year herbology major Richard Hugh said.

Though some parents are scared, others have actually encouraged their children to join in. Michael Za, a gardener and dad of two, joined his daughters on a tour and was pleasantly surprised to find that one stop involved more than some fun facts. Za, his children and Hugh were later seen joining some students on the lagoon lawn for a bong rip.

“My dad actually wanted me to try the bong so I wouldn’t look stupid if I tried it for the first time at a party. I really can’t wait to live here, this for sure solidified my decision to commit to UCSB,” incoming film and media studies major Rachel Za said, already envisioning herself at the smoke circle in front of the library.

Along with weed-themed tours, the campus store also made special merchandise for the occasion, ordering lighters with Chancellor Henry T. Yang’s face on them. Selling for $4.20, the university hopes to make a great profit from the families visiting campus.

While the tours may have encouraged some prospective students, they mostly drove families away. However, for those brave enough to participate in future tours, it has been encouraged to BYOP (Bring Your Own Pen).
