Love entered my life when I received that text from that unknown number. “Hey Chris, it’s Jared. Just got a new number.” I giggled. Silly Jared, I’m not Chris. I replied to the message, telling him he had the wrong number.
“What’s your name?” He asked. I was surprised. Why would this strange man want to know my name? I thought to myself for a bit, and then it came to me — he was flirting with me!
I told him my name, and he quickly asked for my address as well.
“Why?” I responded, confused.
“I want to send you a gift for being such a good friend to me,” he texted back, and I felt my heart flutter. He wanted to send me a token of affection. Or perhaps he wanted to arrive outside my dorm window at night to serenade me in the moonlight.
I didn’t even hesitate to type out my information, my heart pounding as I watched the three pulsing dots (…) pop up in our chat, knowing that somewhere out there, the man of my dreams was thinking of something to say to me.
I could practically see the Valentine’s Day card I would make for Jared, the dates we would go on.
“Send me a picture of your face, my love” I said, and the three pulsing dots (…) disappeared. Perhaps he was at a loss for words at the forwardness of the request. He didn’t reply for an hour, but I sat staring at my phone until finally, the dots reappeared on the screen.
“Only if you send me a picture of your social security number first, just so I can make sure you’re not a scammer.”
I was shocked. How could he possibly think I was a scammer? Could he not feel the magnetic force of fate, pulling us soulmates together?
So of course I sent him my social security number, already picturing it on a marriage license, legally binding us together forever, through sickness and in health.
“Your turn <3” I wrote, eagerly waiting for the three dots to appear.
“If you send me some money, I’ll show you my face in person.” I logged into my bank account immediately. “When will you visit?” I eagerly typed out.
It’s been a month already, and no response yet. Maybe he’s just trying to make sure he looks his best before he responds?
I check everyday for new notifications, but there is nothing from my messages. It’s always just a bunch of alerts from my bank, warning about fraudulent activity. Oh, and one from the government saying that my identity has been stolen. But everyday I wake up with renewed hope that I’ll be able to lay eyes on my beloved, never to be parted again.
