Nestled just off Hollister Avenue in Goleta, Hochaya is a boba shop that stands out for its delightful drinks and friendly staff. The menu offers a variety of boba options, showcasing both classic and innovative flavors. I tried two standout drinks during my visit, both of which highlighted the shop’s commitment to quality and taste.

First up was the guava fruit tea with lychee jelly. This drink, one of Hochaya’s most popular, was refreshing with a light and fruity flavor, perfect for warm days. The guava base was smooth and offered a well-balanced, subtle sweetness.

However, the slices of fruit included were a bit on the larger side, which made them more of a challenge to enjoy than an enhancement to the drink itself. While they added a vibrant visual appeal, they didn’t entirely integrate into the overall experience as much as I had hoped. Nonetheless, the guava fruit tea was a solid choice, showcasing Hochaya’s dedication to using excellent ingredients.

However, the real highlight of my visit was the boba milk tea with brown sugar boba. This drink boasted a perfect blend of flavors that left me craving more. The milk tea was rich and creamy, complemented beautifully by the sweetness of the brown sugar. The boba itself truly set this drink apart: the texture was just right, offering that satisfying chewiness essential to any boba experience. Too often, boba will either have an uncharacteristic crunch or simply disintegrate in your mouth. Hochaya manages to strike the perfect balance. Each sip felt indulgent, making it clear that Hochaya takes pride in crafting drinks that taste good and deliver on texture. My only note to readers when ordering this drink is to order it with less ice.

While the drinks were great, Hochaya’s atmosphere left something to be desired. Over half of the front of the store was roped off during both of my visits. Hopefully this is a temporary situation for repairs or improvements, and I will be able to fully enjoy the extent of the space upon my next trip.

The staff’s positive energy translates into the customer experience, making each visit feel personal and enjoyable. According to employee Jolee Nguyen, working at Hochaya is a unique experience marked by a laid-back vibe and camaraderie among coworkers.

“All the employees are really friends with each other, and they’re so funny,” Nguyen said.

Nguyen reflected on a positive employee experience.

“I would say it’s different from working at other places because it’s so flexible and we get free drinks,” she said.

In conclusion, Hochaya is a delightful boba shop with a unique combination of refreshing drinks and an enthusiastic staff. Whether you’re a boba enthusiast or a newcomer to the world of bubble tea, Hochaya is worth a visit. The boba milk tea with brown sugar boba is a must-try, and the refreshing guava fruit tea comes in at a close second. Next time, I’m going to make sure to try their boba matcha latte. Overall, Hochaya promises a fulfilling experience that keeps customers coming back for more.
