UC Santa Barbara Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Margaret Klawunn released a survey on March 4 to gather student input on how to use University of California President Michael V. Drake’s one-time funding to help UC campuses combat bias, bigotry and discrimination, according to a campus-wide email.
“This is an important opportunity to address bias faced by advocates for Palestine and Israel when it is rooted in stereotypes and prejudices against protected identities,” the statement read.
Ideas must be submitted by Sunday, March 18. The ideas will fall under the categories of mental health and trauma support, extracurricular education programming and other student- or staff-led initiatives.
“You can propose that an idea be led by individual students, a campus organization, or a University department,” the statement read.
The Student Affairs Student Cabinet and Student Affairs Executive Team will review and select ideas submitted through the survey in a two-week time period.
Selected ideas will receive one-time grant funding and publicity co-sponsorship, as well as be featured in University-wide communications. All approved ideas are aimed to be implemented on campus by Fall Quarter 2024.
The grant amounts will range between $500 and $5,000, with some exceptions for larger funds.
The email also announced various new initiatives being implemented this quarter, including an emergency mental health and trauma support fund, support for the Graduate Student Association’s Professional Development program, expansion of the Halal and Kosher Grocery Program, community dinners and further investment in restorative justice efforts.
UCSB Media Relations Manager Kiki Reyes did not respond to request for comment on what the one-time funding will specifically support on campus.
The Nexus will continue to report on this topic as more information becomes available.
