The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office arrested a 40-year-old man around 7 a.m. on Thursday morning following reports of a burglary that had occurred directly before on the 6500 block of Del Playa Drive.

When deputies arrived at the scene of the burglary, the suspect, Sergei Gonchar of Goleta, fled the scene and headed toward the beach near the Camino Del Sur beach entrance, according to a press release from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies followed Gonchar onto the beach and subsequently arrested him after he was cornered in by the rising tide, the press release continued.
Gonchar was found “to be in possession of the items that had just been stolen from the residence on Del Playa,” according to the press release, and has been booked on $50,000 bond at the Santa Barbara County Jail, where he remains in custody.
