Police and medical assistance responded to an ocean rescue off the 6600 block of Del Playa Drive Sunday evening, according to the Santa Barbara County police scanner.

Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office (SBSO) initially responded to a report of two individuals in a kayak “making no leeway” in an attempt to return to shore, according to the scanner.

The subjects were “moving paddles back and forth” and in a “westerly” direction. It was unknown at the time if they had life jackets.

Approximately 17 minutes after the water rescue initially began, the two subjects safely landed at UC Santa Barbara’s Campus Point without assistance and walked up the steps to greet police and medical personnel.

They later said they were “somewhat unstable” in the water and were concerned because it had become dark outside, according to the scanner.

There were no other kayaks in the area and the ocean is clear as of 8:21 p.m.
