Associate professor of feminist studies Mireille Miller-Young pleaded not guilty to three misdemeanor charges last Friday. She was charged with theft from a person, battery and vandalism, according to the Office of the District Attorney for Santa Barbara County.
Miller-Young allegedly took a sign from a member of Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust, an organization protesting in the Arbor in front of the Davidson Library on March 4, before battering another protestor and ultimately destroying the sign. She did not appear in court for her arraignment but will do so on May 1 for a readiness-and-settlement hearing.
Is this the quality of professor we’ve got now? I’ve never been more embarrassed to be a UCSC alum. This idiot has no idea what “free speech” is. Didn’t the left used to be in favor of free speech? What was the Free Speech Movement really about?
While I agree that this particular professor acted stupidly and without any sort of rational thought, clearly attempting to violate another person’s right to free speech, your generalization of the “left” shows you to be at least as idiotic.
You simply cannot compare a blog comment’s opinion with an unprovoked act of vandalism by someone who should know better. As for my point about the left’s intolerance for free speech, you need to read more. A google search for “left intolerance on free speech” generates over 3.4 million responses. Embarrassed to be a UCSC (UC Santa Cruz) alum? UCSC has on its faculty both Angela Davis, the 1960’s radical, and Bettina Aptheker, a well-known communist. If this sort of thing embarrasses you, your embarrassment meter should have been pegged at maximum long ago.
Not Guilty? Really? Mrs. Miller-Young, take my advice. Plead Guilty, apologize, and move on with your life. End of story. Why would you prolong this foolishness? On ever level you are wrong. EVERY SINGLE LEVEL. You tried to inflame students to attack a long girl. For that reason alone you should be dismissed.
*attack a “young” girl.
This situation scares me. She feels justified in committing these crimes against someone she disagrees with. Her assault on free speech is OK because she said she was “triggered”. She has probably been getting away with anything she wants for long time, thus she had the nerve to do this. How this tenured but oddly unpublished professor gets away with this is disturbing and speaks to the power of her ilk. Think of the good that her salary would do if they took the money from her and used it to say, pay for tutors for at risk students. Actual… Read more »
Kinda hard for her to plead not guilty with the video that’s out there.
