A young woman was critically injured in an Isla Vista bluff fall below the 6700 block of Del Playa Drive just before midnight on Friday evening.

Found to have fallen 60 to 70 feet from the bluff, the woman was taken to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital after being discovered and received treatment for her injuries shortly after.

In the past two years, five people — including the victim in Friday’s incident — have fallen off the cliffs along Del Playa Drive, according to the Office of Student Life records.

In light of the historically dangerous nature of Isla Vista’s cliffs, Isla Vista Foot Patrol Lieutenant Rob Plastino said he recommends students always observe and follow all safety signs and structures along the cliffs.

“The fencing and signs along the cliff edge are posted for a reason and ought be heeded,” Plastino said.

Further information in regard to the victim’s current condition cannot yet be released due to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services regulations; however, IVFP will be releasing more information later in the week.
