Two men were injured last week after falling from cliffs along the 6700 block of Del Playa Drive in Isla Vista.
On Sept. 12, emergency personnel responded to a call at around 1:30 a.m. regarding a man who had fallen roughly 30 feet from the cliffs and onto the beach. After arriving to the scene and descending to the shoreline, Santa Barbara County Fire Department officials found two victims, both of whom survived.
Though they suffered minor to moderate head injuries, the victims were reportedly cushioned by underwater piles of seaweed that had accumulated from the ocean’s high tide.
Officials later learned that the first victim, a 19-year-old Santa Barbara Community College student, intentionally jumped off the cliff after a breakup with his longtime girlfriend. He was recently transferred to Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital after sustaining moderate injuries.
The second victim, who suffered only minor injuries, allegedly told firefighters that he witnessed the first incident and jumped over the cliff in an attempt to rescue his friend.
