UCSB student Felisha Olmos was struck by a vehicle on Mesa Road early yesterday morning and is currently in critical condition at Cottage Hospital.
According to UCPD Public Information Officer Sergeant Rob Romero, Olmos allegedly veered out into the middle of the road while jogging and was struck from behind by a vehicle traveling eastbound on Mesa Road between Stadium Road and Los Carneros Road. Olmos was treated for severe head injuries and immediately transported to Cottage Hospital.
UCSB Police Department officers responded to reports of a vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision at 7:30 a.m. Romero said although officers and California Highway Patrol constantly patrol the area, he hopes students will remain cautious and aware of their surroundings.
“We just want everyone to know to stay safe and to try to use bicycle and foot paths whenever possible other than running on the road,” Romero said.
The UCSB Emergency Alert system notified students via email and text message that Mesa Road would be closed for accident investigations at 7:58 a.m. and was later reopened around 9 a.m. Although the suspect has been identified, police officials have not released this information to the public.
