The No. 6 UCSB men’s volleyballteam never recovered after dropping thefirst set to No. 13 Pepperdine at theFirestone Fieldhouse in Malibu, eventuallylosing the match in straight sets27-29, 16-25 and 21-25. The loss dropsthe Gauchos to 14-13 overall and 11-10 inthe Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.Senior Cullen Irons led the Gauchoswith 17 kills, three digs and one block,while senior setter Vince Devany added44 assists to bring his season total to1,072.While the Gauchos have shownflashes of dominance this season, consistencyhas been a real problem. Just onegame before beating Stanford, UCSBwas upset by No. 15 Pacific — a teamthey had beaten twice already this season.UCSB plays its last game of the seasonagainst No. 1 USC in Los Angeles onSaturday. The Trojans have won 15 oftheir last 16 games.
