In Friday night’s road match against its Cal Poly rivals, the UCSB Women’s Soccer team lost 1-0 to end its season just short of qualifying for the Big West Tournament.

“Cal Poly is a high-pressure team and we just didn’t handle the pressure well in the first half,” Head Coach Paul Stumpf said.

The Gauchos played competitively, but freshman goalkeeper Makenna Henry’s six saves were not enough to surpass another night of offensive struggles. While UCSB has generally managed to outshoot its opponents without finding the back of the net, Cal Poly outshot the Gauchos 15-7 – with seven shots on goal compared to the Gauchos’ two.

UCSB ends its season 8-9-2 overall, with a 3-5 Big West record, giving them a sixth place conference record. A win in San Luis Obispo would have accomplished nothing but bragging rights, because Northridge’s win on Thursday pushed the Gauchos out of contention for the tournament, which admits only the conference’s top four teams.

Ten seniors ended their careers as Gauchos on Friday night, including five starters.

“[This senior class] went to two NCAA Tournaments, won two Big West Tournament championships and won some really big games,” Stumpf said.

They worked very hard and achieved a great deal. I am very proud of them.”
