New Fees
Career Services: $5.55
Unlike those offered by CLAS and Counseling Services, the services provided by the Career Center are easily found elsewhere. While asking students for money is easier than making the hard decisions necessary to balance a budget internally, it is unfair and unnecessary.

CLAS: $16.16
Affordable academic tutoring services are vital to maintaining the quality of education at UCSB. CLAS benefits (and employs) enough students to justify this steep new fee.

Counseling Services: $10.85
The Counseling Center offers free services to all students, including appointments, drop-in hours and support groups. Available, affordable mental health services are essential for the overall health and happiness of our community.

Student Services Renewable Energy Initiative: $6.00
Student lock-in fees should go to provide services that benefit students directly, not pay for costly special projects. Even worse, this fee won’t be up for reaffirmation for ten years, setting a bad precedent.

Isla Vista Arts: $2.00
I.V. Arts provides funding for several student-run groups, including Magic Lantern Films and Word Magazine. All students stand to benefit from these services.

Fee Reaffirmations
UCen Support Fee: $9.00
The UCen employs hundreds of students and provides the entire student body with a place to study, eat and hang out on campus. Without the continuation of this fee, hours will be cut even more, keeping us out of OUR building.

Intercollegiate Athletics Scholarships Fee: $9.00
Student athletes receive countless perks, including free personal tutoring, priority registration and access to exclusive gym facilities (paid for with a $34 fee from students). ICA should seek donations or other funds to support these scholarships.

Multicultural Center Support Fee: $1.75
The MCC offers numerous free programs throughout the year and provides meeting and performance space for various student groups. This fee will help maintain the center and provide student jobs.

Community Affairs Board Volunteer Support Fee: $0.76
Community Affairs Board receives over $130,000 from the A.S. lock-in fee — why do they need more?

Rec Sports Fee: $7.00
Reaffirming this fee will make it possible for any interested student to participate by keeping sign-up costs low. It also funds hundreds of on-campus student jobs.

The Green Initiative Fund: $3.47
This fund aims to provide grant money for environmentally friendly projects, but its most expensive projects have been off-campus. Student money should not fund groups that fail to provide tangible benefits to our campus.

Education Opportunity Program: $1.25
EOP provides services and scholarships to underprivileged students. Making college affordable for everyone benefits our campus.

Night and Weekend Parking: $3.33
This modest fee shields students from sky-high rates at on-campus parking lots.

Career Services
Career Services does more for UCSB Students than any other organization on the ballot. The dedicated staff at the Career Center on campus goes above and beyond for every student they speak with. Career Services throws 5 career fairs where they bring in companies from across the country to hire ON CAMPUS. If the Daily Nexus really thinks that these services can easily be found elsewhere, I would like to know where.
Career Services Helps!
The Department of Career Services helps many students everyday through many resources that they offer. It’s one-stop shop to find on-campus jobs, internships, graduate school information and career workshops. Career Fairs are a vital tool for students when trying to find summer internships and full-time employment for those graduating seniors. The Career Fairs offer a variety of employers ranging from technical to non-technical job opportunities. The fee Career Services is offering is not as much as other departments. These services are important especially to graduating seniors who need help with grad schools and finding jobs. Where else would students go to where they can find all the resources that Career Services offers in one place?
TGIF
TGIF should be supported! I am disappointed that the information included about TGIF-funded projects is entirely misleading. Of the approximately 45 projects that have been funded by TGIF over the past four years, only three have been off-campus – and all of these were at UCSB-run research facilities. The UCSB campus does, in fact, pay the utility bills on these locations, and therefore, there is a direct impact to the campus energy demands, utility budget, and greenhouse emissions. In addition, these facilities house numerous UCSB students who use the centers for field courses and research. TGIF is a vital part of maintaining sustainability on our campus and should certainly deserve a YES vote for reaffirmation.
Support for Career Services
I was sorely disappointed to see The Daily Nexus brush aside Career Services in their endorsements. To college students on the brink of entering the professional world the resources Career Services offers are invaluable. Not supporting the fee initiative would cut a quarter of the services they offer.
As far as The Daily Nexus’ assertion that the resources are “easily found elsewhere”, they are absolutely right- they are available at a steep price. Two of our most popular services are resume critiques and appointments with Career Counselors. Resume critiques outside of UCSB start at around 75.00, while a Career Planning package at a local outside consulting firm starts at 300.00. Hardly an affordable price for a college student’s budget.
Clearly, The Daily Nexus’ “research” was not quite thorough enough. Career Services helps students searching for jobs, internships, and full time positions. They also provide resume and cover letter critiques, help with personal statements, Career Fairs, workshops, graduate school counseling, and interview practice. Career Services is the liaison between college students and the professional working world. To cut that, would be detrimental to the entire student population.
Some of the endorsement items are way OFF
Career Services has provided many services that people sometimes don’t even associate with them, such as the Grad and Professional Day. Do you think that those grad schools just organize this event by themselves? Wrong! It takes time and money to invite and coordinate with the participating schools, and to organize this annual event. And it’s Career Services that makes it possible. Same as seasonal career fairs and frequent workshops (finding jobs, resume writing, or choosing major etc.). I think it is an obvious error by Daily Nexus to assume that the services Career SErvices provide are "easily found elsewhere." BTW, Career Services has funds many on-campus jobs for both under-grad and grad students throughout the years.
