A $75 million gift from former Qualcomm Incorporated CEO and UC San Diego founding faculty member Irwin Jacobs and his wife Joan Jacobs will go toward the construction of the Jacobs Medical Center on UCSD’s east campus.

The new 10-story, 490,000 square foot medical center, which is expected to contain 245 beds for patients, will be built next to Thornton Hospital, a UC San Diego Health System facility.

The building will house the UCSD Health Systems’ Moores Cancer Center, Hospital for Advanced Surgery and Hospital for Women and Infants.

The facility will also be part of a UCSD collaborative network involved in interdisciplinary medical research and education.

Construction of the Jacobs Medical Center is expected to begin in early 2012 and finish by June 2016.

Patient care should begin by December of 2016.
