A 20-year-old male UCSB student died in Isla Vista Tuesday night. Officials say it appears the individual committed suicide.

The Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Dept. responded to a 9-1-1 call from a local fraternity house at approximately 8 p.m. on reports that a resident had stopped breathing. Lt. Brian Olmstead of the Isla Vista Foot Patrol said that three deputies arrived at the house within several minutes and Emergency Medical Technicians later pronounced the individual dead on the scene.

“When our deputies arrived on the scene, it was clear that the individual was beyond medical aid,” Olmstead said. “There was nothing that could be done to save him.”

Authorities are investigating the possibility of suicide based on the evidence at the scene – including what is believed to be a suicide note – and the nature of the injuries, Olmstead said. The Sheriff’s Dept. will not release the official cause of death, however, until a coroner’s report is filed.

The deceased’s next of kin has been notified, but the Daily Nexus will not publish the student’s name until next week, when more information is available.
