Almost two months after replacing Brooks Firestone as I.V.’s only elected county official, 3rd District Supervisor Doreen Farr will open her Isla Vista office tomorrow.

Farr will host the opening between 4 and 6 p.m. Wednesday at 970 Embarcadero del Mar. Farr said the event will provide an opportunity for residents to discuss current Isla Vista issues and voice concerns or opinions.

Farr said she hopes the Isla Vista office will cater to the concerns of local students and residents, who make up a significant portion of the 3rd District.

“The population of Isla Vista is bigger than some of the small incorporated towns in the county – and it isn’t incorporated – so it’s important at the district level of government to be responsive to the community in a location where people can access county government and talk to someone face to face,” Farr said.

Farr said it is vital to provide I.V. residents access to local government.

“It’s not that far to go downtown to Santa Barbara for the main office, but I think for communities like Isla Vista where a lot of people may not have access to cars or are used to riding bikes we should make it as easy as possible,” she said.

Farr anticipates holding regular staffed hours at the I.V. location, but said her employees are still working out the details.

“We’re trying to be responsive for what would work best for the community,” she said. “We were thinking mid-week probably starting later in the afternoon since a lot of people are in class or working during the mornings.”

Farr said she hopes the specific hours will be available to publicize at the office opening this Wednesday.
