The UCSB surf team held tryouts on the beach below the 6500 block of Del Playa Drive yesterday, with team leaders hoping to recruit some fresh talent for the upcoming season.

With 11 national titles already on board, the reigning National Scholastic Surfing Association college champions have a strong record to maintain this year.

Still, Captains Joe Riggio Jr. and Matt Schulman, who oversaw the morning tryouts, expressed nothing but confidence at the Gauchos’ prospects for the upcoming season.

“We know the talent of the kids at UCSB is ‘rip hard,'” Riggio said. “As long as we show up sober, we can win every time.”
