Sixteen UCSB athletes were honored last Thursday at a banquet for the Golden Eagle Award, which celebrates student-athletes who have excelled both in the classroom and on the field. To be eligible for the honor, athletes must be a junior or senior, maintain a GPA of at least 3.25, have been at UCSB for at least three academic quarters and have been a member of an intercollegiate athletic team for at least half of a season. During the ceremony, each athlete was presented a personalized plaque and the player’s coach made a speech about the honoree. Only one athlete was honored per sport and the only sports without a representative were men’s basketball, men’s cross-country and women’s cross-country. The award was created by Peter Jordano and the Pacific Beverage Company with the goal of honoring student-athletes who not only have had athletic and academic success, but have high personal integrity as well.
