UCSB’s track season started strong this past Saturday at the Gaucho Round-Up.

The men’s and women’s teams won 25 out of 35 events in the quad-meet with Westmont, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pepperdine, highlighted by two distance victories for junior Danielle Domenichelli and three field wins for senior Jeff Stewart.

Domenichelli took first place in the 1500 meter in a time of 4:51.63 and senior Chris Ashley followed suit on the men’s side to win in 3:56.95 for the first two individual events of the day. In sprints, senior Yuora Yelpaala managed to finish under a minute in the 400m at 59.25 and junior Jason Newland also crossed in first at 50.68. Freshman Dominique Augustus won both the 100m and the 200m in times of 12.96 and 26.22, respectively.

Out on the field, Stewart dominated the discus, hammer throw and shot put, while sophomore Kayla Smith captured wins in both the shot and discus. Another male and female sweep came during the pole vault as freshman Jennifer Brown and senior Brian Rother both finished first.

Hurdles were next and sophomore Brian Sung overcame a headwind and won the 110m competition in 15.83. Barbara Nwaba and Alvin Go, a pair of freshmen, were winners of each set of 400m hurdles.

The 3000m race featured victories by cross-country staples Domenichelli in 10:23 and senior Michael Powers in 8:43, and the afternoon finished with a convincing finish for the women’s 1600m relay in a time of 4:07.

The teams travel next to Irvine for the All-Cal Challenge on March 1.
