A trio from the UCSB track & field team competed in the heptathlon and decathlon during the first two days of the Big West Track & Field Championships over the weekend, highlighted by senior jumper Katie Kramer’s second place finish in the long jump. Kramer took the second spot with a 5.65-meter mark and wrapped up third in the 800 meter with a 2:19.43 effort.

Joining Kramer from the women’s squad to partake in the heptathlon was junior hurdler Lauri Schakett, who currently stands in seventh place while Kramer ended in eighth. UC Irvine sophomore Lauren Collins holds the top spot with 3389 points after four events. The long jump, javelin and 800-meter race will all take place next weekend.

The only member from Santa Barbara’s men’s team to compete was freshman hurdler Andrew Johnston, who suited up for the decathlon. Johnston finished in ninth in a field of 11, but grabbed third in the 110 meter hurtles with a 15.42 second time.

The championships will be concluded next weekend when the conference’s best gather for the remaining events. The third day of competition will be next Friday and the event will conclude Saturday.
