An Isla Vista resident was arrested early Sunday morning on felony DUI charges following a high-speed collision on Highway 101.

Around 1:40 a.m., Toru Ogawa, 25, allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, rear-ended a 1992 Ford Escort driven by 21-year-old Goleta resident Ali Jamalzadeh in a northbound lane of the freeway at Fairview Avenue. According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision caused both cars to spin out of control and forced Ogawa’s car to roll over, finally coming to rest in the bushes alongside the road. Jamalzadeh’s car came to a stop in the middle of the Fairview Avenue offramp.

According to police, both drivers sustained minor injuries. An investigation revealed Ogawa was driving at a high speed as he approached the exit, at which time he failed to slow down and hit Jamalzadeh’s vehicle.

Upon arriving at the scene, paramedics treated Jamalzadeh for a facial laceration and a broken nose. Ogawa complained of pain in his left leg.

CHP officers took Ogawa into custody after determining he was intoxicated and that his actions caused the collision.
