The Santa Barbara County Sherriff’s Dept. is investigating human bones found near Gaviota Creek yesterday morning.

Sheriff’s Depart. spokesman Sgt. Chris Pappas said the case is being treated as a suspicious death.

“The coroner is attempting to identify the decedent,” Pappas said. “This is an ongoing investigation.”

United States Geological Survey workers discovered the skeletal remains at approximately 9 a.m. Monday. The remains were located about half a mile east from the Gaviota Tunnel. Although police are currently investigating a different set of human remains found Jan. 13 in the New Cuyama region of Santa Barbara County, Pappas said the two cases are probably not related. He said he could not provide further details regarding either case as both are still currently being investigated.

Pappas also said that anybody with information regarding this investigation should call the Sheriff’s Dept. at (805) 681-4100 or the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at (877) 800-9100.
