Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Dept. deputies arrested the former father-in-law of UCSB graduate student Jarrod Davidson in connection with the shooting that took Davidson’s life last July.

Police took 50-year-old Philip Jones into custody on charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder at his home on the 1000 block of Atlantic City Dr. in Grover Beach, Calif., at approximately 7:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. Jones is the second suspect to be arrested in connection with the case.

His wife, and Davidson’s former mother-in-law, 49-year-old Malinda Jones, was arrested Jan. 7 and remains in police custody. Sheriff’s Dept. spokesman Sgt. Chris Pappas said that, although the Jones’ arrests were important to the advancement of the investigation, the case has not yet been solved.

“We still do not have possession of the murder weapon, and we’re looking for anyone with information that could further the investigation,” Pappas said. “The matter is still ongoing.”

Davidson was fatally shot in front of his Goleta apartment on July 9, 2004. Witnesses reported seeing a man and woman fleeing the scene.

Pappas encouraged people to contact authorities if they know anything that could potentially help the investigation. He went on to credit the Jan. 20 arrest of Anthony Reyes Vera Jr., for the unrelated robbery of a local Bank of America, to an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers. Crime Stoppers of Santa Barbara is offering a $10,000 reward for any information that could lead to the arrest of additional suspects in the Davidson investigation.

Pappas said anyone with information about the case should contact either the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Dept. or call the anonymous Crime Stoppers tip line at (877) 800-9100.
