For 30 years, the people of Isla Vista have been struggling for a community center. On Nov. 2, this dream can become a reality with a “yes” vote on Measure D. There are countless reasons to support this community center. For the sporty, there will be a skate park, basketball courts and a full-sized soccer field. For student organizations and cultural events, there will be meeting space and a large multipurpose room. For those with a green thumb, there will be improved community gardens. The community center will also be held to green building standards. For the families of Isla Vista – who comprise about one forth of the population – there will be childcare and a teen center.

And, we don’t have to pay for any of this – Measure D is not a tax. It merely allows the Isla Vista Recreation and Park District to lease its land for the community center. The money to build the community center will be raised by the nonprofit organizations that will run it.

So, on Nov. 2, go down to the bottom of the ballot and vote yes on Measure D, and help make the Isla Vista Community Center a reality.
