Though once a magnet for up-and-coming bands, larger touring acts and jaw-dropping performers, Santa Barbara’s musical reputation has waned in the last few years. After the closing in 2002 of the Living Room, which was the only larger-scale punk and indie music venue in the Santa Barbara and Goleta area at the time, most bands have bypassed Santa Barbara altogether. Recently, however, the locally run and appropriately named Hard to Find Showspace has been scoring some crowd-pleasers, including Pinback and Hot Hot Heat, in its tiny room connected to a church in Goleta. Unfortunately, shows are not consistent at the venue and often hard to find out about, as they publicize very little, so get on their mailing list at their website.
