At a hearing Tuesday morning, a Santa Barbara County judge agreed to postpone the jury trial of Slava Olsen until August 2004.

Olsen faces felony charges of involuntary manslaughter, assault with intent to create bodily injury and battery for allegedly causing the death of 19-year-old Santa Barbara City College student Bradley Jones. Olsen’s trial was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but Santa Barbara County Superior Court Judge Joseph Lodge granted the defense’s request for an extension.

Deputy District Attorney Joshua Lynn said the defense made a motion to reduce or dismiss some of the charges against Olsen. Barring any setbacks, Lynn said the motion will be resolved at the next hearing of the case on June 8.

The charges against Olsen stem from a Feb. 28 incident in which he allegedly punched Jones in the face after a brief confrontation on the 6600 block of Sabado Tarde Road. The blow knocked Jones backward, causing him to fall and hit his head on the ground. He suffered severe head trauma and entered a coma before passing away at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital two days later.
