Two people were moderately injured when their small sport utility vehicle rolled over Monday afternoon on Highway 101.

The single vehicle accident occurred around 2:20 p.m. between the Tajiguas landfill and Refugio State Beach. The driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll over into the center divider, said Capt. Charlie Johnson, spokesperson for the Santa Barbara County Fire Dept.

The two occupants, one male and one female, each approximately 60 years old, were still seatbelted into the car after the rollover, Johnson said. They were transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital by an American Medical Response ambulance.

“Apparently there were about five people who stopped to render assistance and managed to cut their seatbelts off and get them out of the vehicle prior to the fire department arriving,” Johnson said.

He said firefighters from stations 11 and 12, in addition to California Highway Patrol officers, responded to the incident.
