While the rainy weather this weekend may have helped fight wildfires, it also caused several car accidents and two deaths in the Santa Barbara area.

A 20-year-old woman from Ojai was killed in a car wreck Friday at 2 p.m. after her car hydroplaned onto a curve on Highway 101 near the Nojoqui Grade leading to the Santa Ynez Valley. The vehicle went over the median and collided with another car, according to the California Highway Patrol. The woman, whose name is being withheld pending notification of the family, was pronounced dead at the scene after paramedics attempted CPR. The driver of the second car, 63-year-old Maurice Rossini, was taken to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, where he is in fair condition.

“The first rain brings out the dirts and the oils on the road, so typically you can count on a number of accidents, and that was proven this weekend,” said Capt. Charlie Johnson, spokesman for the Santa Barbara Fire Department.

Another person died in an accident Sunday evening on Highway 154 at Rancho Allegr
