An inmate at the Santa Barbara County Jail died Oct. 26 after complaining of shortness of breath and chest pains.

Tommy Martinez, 32, was transported by ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital late Saturday night and admitted to the Cardiac Care Unit, where the sheriff’s department said he continued to experience instances of cardiac arrest over several hours.

He was pronounced dead around 6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 26.

An examination by the sheriff’s department coroner determined the cause of death to be acute bacterial endocarditis caused by intravenous drug abuse.

Police said Martinez, who was a resident of Guadalupe, had been serving a 180-day jail sentence for a variety of warrants. Santa Maria police had arrested him Oct. 20, 2003.
