Goleta resident David Montanes, 23, was shot to death outside of his grandmother’s apartment complex on Ortega Street in Santa Barbara on Saturday night.

Santa Barbara police officers were in the vicinity investigating a tip regarding illegal fireworks around 8 p.m. when they heard four gunshots. The officers arrived at the scene shortly after the gunfire, but Montanes was already dead.

Officers believe they saw a man run from the scene shortly after their arrival. Jose Romo, 24, was detained on the 300 block of East De La Guerra Street as a possible suspect. Romo was questioned at the Santa Barbara police station Saturday night then booked into jail without bail. A handgun was later found on Laguna Street.

Although no motive has been determined, Sgt. Gaona of the SB Police Dept. said both men may be affiliated with gangs. Family members of Montanes said they knew of no such affiliations and are unaware of any possible connection between the two men.

An investigation on the incident is still pending.
