Editor, Daily Nexus,

As the week (April 14-17) devoted to “Take Back the Night” activities approaches, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the important contributions that the A.S. Women’s Commission makes to this campus. In its role of educating about and advocating for women’s rights and well-being, the Women’s Commission sponsors a wide array of events and serves as a resource on women’s issues throughout the year. In particular, the commission organizes and presents the annual “Take Back the Night” week of events in conjunction with an international observance. This week is devoted to increasing awareness about violence against women and decreasing its incidence in our campus community.

I want to commend and thank the members of A.S. Women’s Commission and the organizers of “Take Back the Night” for preventing us from becoming complacent about the plight of women in our society and reminding us that the effort to eradicate violence against women requires a sustained commitment on the part of men and women alike. I urge everyone on campus to participate in the “Take Back the Night” activities that begin on April 14 and to support the continuing work of the A.S. Women’s Commission.
