Junior pre-psychology major Chris David Becker passed away Monday morning of unknown causes. He was 23 years old.

On Monday at 9:53 a.m., UC police responded to a call that a male resident was found not breathing in his room at the campus-owned Santa Ynez Apartments on El Colegio Road. Officers attempted, but were unable, to resuscitate Becker, County Sheriff spokesman Chris Pappas said. Becker was transported to Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10:52 a.m.

An autopsy was completed by the County Coroner’s Office on Tuesday, but the cause of death has not yet been determined as the coroner’s office awaits the results of toxicology tests, which should be available next week.

Foul play is not suspected.

Becker was originally from Sacramento and transferred to UCSB in the fall.

“I was shocked and extremely saddened to hear of the untimely passing of this young man, and his family has our deepest condolences,” Chancellor Henry T. Yang said.

A memorial service was held for Becker at the Jamison Community Center at Santa Ynez on Tuesday, during which family and friends spoke about Becker’s life. The campus flag in front of Cheadle Hall was flown at half-mast on Wednesday in honor of Becker.
