I want to start off by saying I feel bad for the Daily Nexus to have had to waste space on such a ridiculous complaint. I also feel sorry for Ms. Katie Wallace (The Reader’s Voice: “Vegetarian Student Can’t Stomach Tasteless Meat Jokes,” April 18, Daily Nexus) for feeling like the world is so harsh to vegetarians.

Personally, I have been a strict vegetarian for many years, and maybe it is just me, but I do not think that jokes made about vegetarians are offensive at all. I come from a family that eats a lot of meat, and I currently live in a house where “steak nights” are the norm. Constantly my friends joke and ask, “Want some steak Jenny?” However, it is just that … A JOKE. No one is trying to “make me conform to society’s ideals of what is normal,” and frankly, I do not think that your friends are, either. Unlike Katie Wallace, I also do not think that being a vegetarian is threatening anyone. Being a vegetarian is simply a personal choice in eating habits. It is really not that big of a deal, and if you take “meat jokes” personally, I think that maybe you should just lighten up and realize no one really cares that much about what you eat.
