Three cars collided Thursday morning on Highway 217 after an 18-year-old UCSB student lost control of her vehicle and spun out into oncoming traffic.

One of the victims, a 21-year-old student, was hospitalized for cuts on her face and neck. Police said she was still under observation in Cottage Hospital’s Critical Care Unit late Thursday afternoon.

The crash occurred at about 7:50 a.m., when the 18-year-old, who was traveling away from campus, lost control of her vehicle and crossed the center divide.

The car spun out and collided with the 21-year-old’s car, which was traveling towards UCSB. The front of another vehicle traveling to UCSB was also struck.

California Highway Patrol Officer Dave Nees said the 18-year-old female thought her brakes had failed, but when he checked them, they looked fine. Nees said there will not be a CHP investigation.

The other drivers were not hospitalized.
