UCSB student Kyle Lopin was charged with felony distribution of child pornography on May 17 after a month-long police investigation.

UC Police Dept. and Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Dept. detectives located the 21-year-old Lopin’s residence, in Santa Ynez off-campus university housing, and seized his computer from his residence for examination. A forensic search of his computer revealed photos of pornography, child pornography and bestiality, according to a UCPD statement.

The investigation began on April 19, when the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children traced the suspect’s computer operation to the UCSB area with the help of an anonymous tip.

The National Center notified the UCSB police, whose detectives collaborated with the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s High-Tech Crimes Detectives to investigate the location of the operation. After completion, the investigation was forwarded to the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s office, where the felony charges were filed Thursday.
