The UCSB Daily Nexus won 20 awards this weekend, six for first place, at the 52nd annual California Intercollegiate Press Association awards ceremony in San Diego.

The newspaper received 13 awards Friday for the mail-in entries, including best Opinion, Arts & Entertainment sections in the state. Photographer Jason Schock scored first-place awards for best News and Sports photograph, while columnist Brendan Buhler won first place for satirical column.

Buhler and Sports Editor Eliav Appelbaum swept the Sports writing on-site competition with first and second place awards, respectively. Artsweek Editor Jenne Raub pulled in second place for on-site Arts & Entertainment writing, while Campus Editor Eric Simons won third place for both mail-in and on-site human-interest/feature writing.

Nexus staffers also received third-place mail-in awards for special section and News article, and in on-site illustrations, editorial writing and photography.

The 20 awards topped last year’s total of 15 awards.
