Isla Vista Recreation and Parks District Director Jacob Lebell announced earlier this month that he is stepping down from his position on the board, citing a desire to focus more on teaching.

Lebell, a Santa Barbara City College and UC Santa Barbara alumnus, has held his position on the board since 2014. He posted a message on Facebook on March 13, detailing his hopes for the future of the Isla Vista Recreation and Parks District (IVRPD) as well as a summary of his years with the district.

He did not respond to multiple requests for further comment.

“I am grateful for the many ways that this community has helped me to learn, grow, and shape me into the person that I am today,” he said in the Facebook post.

“I love Isla Vista, our parks, and the strong presence of so many wonderful and dedicated community members and organizations. It has truly been such an honor to serve with you all for these past few years.”

He also said he hopes the board will pursue several projects regarding public spaces that he could not, which includes focusing on “safety, community and wi-fi.”

“I believe creating and consistently maintaining access to spaces like these at night would be truly transformative achievement for our community,” he said.

“While something of this magnitude will require the efforts and collaborations of many community organizations and stakeholders. It is my parting wish that the IVRPD board of Directors, can and should take the lead in making this a reality.”

The board’s next meeting is on April 11 at 961 Embarcadero Del Mar.
