After two days and three rounds at the Barona Collegiate Cup in Lakeside, Calif., the UCSB men’s golf team finished ninth in the tournament with a score of 10-under-par-864.

Juniors Greg Wells and Michael Feurerstein finished first for UCSB with a score of 4-under-par-216. They tied for 21st place overall in the tournament.

“We played as good as any team,” Wells said. “Basically, everyone knows now that we can compete with any team out there.”

Senior Nick Telliard finished third for the Gauchos, swinging 1-under-par-288 and finishing 36th overall.

“It was our best field of the year that we played.” Telliard said.

The Gauchos managed three solid rounds of the tournament, starting 1-over-par-288 in the first and ending 2-over-par-288 in the third. They peaked in the second round, swinging 13-under-par-288.

“The second round really was one of the best ones we have ever played,” Head Coach Steve Lass said. “It was just awesome.”

Although UCSB finished in the top 10, Lass felt that the team could have performed better.

“We struggled today,” Lass said. “It definitely could have been a better finish.”

Compared to the previous tournament, which was rained out and had a cancelled third round, the Gauchos played under much better conditions.

“It was cold in the morning,” Telliard said. “But after the first few holes it warmed up and it was fine.”

Santa Barbara will play next Thursday, Nov. 4, at the Del Walker 49er Invitational in Long Beach.
